Title: Another Axon

Project Type: InstallationAnother Axon uses the conventions of an architectural axonometric drawing to make three-dimensional space with an ideal view of the installation seen from the top level of an adjacent, mudane parking garage.


Another Axon is composed of minimal art objects and a stand of twelve trees, all of which rely on contemporary reproduction strategies. The art sculptures are lifted from an open source 3D warehouse and range from Donald Judd’s Untitled (1961) to Carl Andre’s Slope (1968) while the artificial trees are constructed by carefully tracing other tree drawings from a landscape catalogue. 
The selection of materials for Another Axon reinforces the constructed, perfect axon view but also places emphasis on the “ordinary” in architecture. Three traditional exterior building materials used ubiquitously across the United States—vinyl siding, EIFS (a synthetic stucco), and artificial turf—are playfully distorted through orientation, color, and application.

Project Type: ExhibitionBorrowing from past and recent history’s best practices for assembling sandwich architecture, Best Sandwiches is a design and research project in search of novel spatial stacks. Awkward middle levels are piled up and squeezed together resulting in messy figures between two slices of architectural bread. Extrusion is not entirely off-limits, but used sparingly. 


The nine sandwiches on display present a close reading of several classic sandwich types: the grilled cheese, the BLT, the hamburger, the Dagwood, and the submarine, to name a few. Color and the deployment of many types of apertures are intentional. They promote the legibility of repeating layers found in a high-stack Dagwood sandwich or suggest the vaguely familiar melting cheddar found in a grilled cheese sandwich. Color is a necessity for reading Best Sandwiches.

Domestic Hats explores ordinary roof typologies and reconsiders the role of the massing model in architectural representation. 
Roof Typologies

A quick drive around a few neighborhoods demonstrate stylistic differences in the domestic architecture of Atlanta. Arguably the single most common element of these houses is the roof. Whether located in English Avenue, Old Fourth Ward, or Ansley Park, shared rooflines crisscross neighborhood boundaries. Ordinary and simplistic, yet highly repetitive, gable and hip roofs dominate the scene while butterfly and mansard roofs represent a rarer species. Dormers, A-frame, and shed roofs are combined to make a complex system of functional rooftops with countless variations. These copy-paste forms not only populate the housing stock, but represent house figures and house shapes widely accepted by the public. Massing ModelsMassing models are usually small in size and the result of a quick, iterative design process by the architect. They represent the schema, the diagram, or a proto-architecture. Lacking detail and often made out of a singular material, massing models distinguish differences in a volumetric study—“slightly thinner”, “no, a little longer”, or better yet, “let’s make it fatter.” Domestic Hats delights in these tendencies to engage multiples, but rejects the constraint of smallness. For these purposes, the massing models are scaled up to an awkward size, they are not easily transportable, and they don’t quite fit in the frame of our foam wire cutter. The massing models to be included in the installation are not large enough to be considered a pavilion, nor do they sit comfortably on a client’s conference room table. &#38;nbsp;Intentionally inflated, these massing models merely represent themselves. No longer a representational stand-in for something else, they reveal new hats for consideration in domestic architecture.

Haus
Gables&#38;nbsp;is a 2,200 square-foot single-family residence located in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
It is one of a handful of residences in the country made of cross-laminated timber (CLT),
an exceptionally strong wood material produced by gluing together layers of
lumber that alternate in direction.


A long-standing research project on roof
typologies found in the American South informed this proof-of-concept. Haus
Gables is a cluster of six gable roofs, combined to form a single roof. In an
attempt to rework spatial paradigms of the past, such as Le Corbusier’s free
plan and
Aldof Loos’s raumplan, MALL offers the roof
plan as
a way to organize architecture. Here, the roof plan establishes rooms,
catwalks, and double height spaces in the interior by aligning these spaces to ridges
and valleys in the roof above. In this case, the floorplan is a result of the
roof.


From a curb-side view, an asymmetrical and
unfamiliar form replaces the traditional gable elevation house, as if the usual
form were clipped. Strange profiles emerge on all four elevations as the six
gable roofs are cut at the perimeter’s massing. Other slight alterations to the
ordinary include roof pitches which are much steeper than those found in
industry standards. The house, which sits on a 24-foot-wide plot, has a width
of 18 feet, the same size as a single-wide mobile home. The
uncharacteristically slim home generates ideas for the applicability of the roof
plan to
denser urban environments.


All exterior and interior walls, floors,
and roof are made of solid Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, a material
widely used in construction overseas but is new to the US market. Custom-cut,
hoisted into place, and assembled in fourteen days’ time, the CLT in Haus
Gablesenables a solid house that eschews stick frame construction. Structurally inventive,
the panels also promote a monolithic view of the material from the domestic
interior.


The project further engages in the
conceptual exploration of materiality through a series of faux-finishes that
clad the exterior and parts of the interior in opposition to expectations.
Black terrazzo is not poured in-place and polished, but applied as a thin tile,
while oriented strand board (OSB) is replaced by ceramic tiles in the image of
OSB. The marble finishes in the bedroom and adjacent bathroom are made of
unlikely materials, including vinyl and cartoonish drawings, rather than the
oft-desired, real, Italian marble. These faux finishes that cover the interior
environment seem to indicate spatial divisions, when in reality they do not
correspond to the actual boundaries of any room. On the exterior, two sides of
the house are covered in faux-bricks made of stucco. Haus
Gables undertakes
an old tradition of faux finishing in the American South, historically stemming
from an inability to afford precious materials, and the subsequent desire to
“fake it.”


With the use of unconventional materials
and an unusual roof design, Haus Gables is an exploration of new
ways that form, spatial organization, and material might function in a home.

Assemblage of Twins seeks to tie the vagaries of the market to a formal architectural proposal. In the real estate economy of suburban Las Vegas, prices are based on square footage, number of bedrooms, variety of amenities, material finishes, and levels of privacy. These buyer’s criteria or variables were tracked, redrawn, and used as the basis for a formal investigation. The proposed housing tower is a critique of the Las Vegas condominium tower, which tends to be either a modernist housing bar or a twinned tower scheme. Variations of nested programmatic elements achieve a different sort of twinning through multiple scales and engagements: units as twins, interiorized twinning, and twins within the larger setting of landscape. Ultimately, this architecture and landscape of performance domesticates the individual within the collective community.

Steeped in
a tradition found in the American South, Glittery Faux-Facade experiments with faux-finishes as a way of cladding exterior and
interior surfaces for a single family residence in Atlanta. Exhibited here for
the Yve Yang Gallery, a series of Glittery
Faux-Façade mock-ups place emphasis on architecture’s most ordinary, ubiquitous
exterior building material—stucco. Rather than using real bricks and wood
siding for the house’s construction, MALL pushes the limits of
architectural representation by designing a series of fake surfaces where the stucco
is made to appear “brick-like” or “wood-like”. Inspired by Mary Corse’s White Light Paintings (1968) and combined with yet another ordinary
material (glass beads specified from the United States Department of
Transportation road striping) the faux-façade series produces glowing,

Faux Brick is a research project that examines the use of exterior faux finishes in Mies van der Rohe’s villas, Haus Esters and Haus Lange, to discover emerging questions of materiality and representation in contemporary architecture. &#38;nbsp;A timely research investigation preempting the 2019 Bauhaus Centennial, this research project examines the use of “faux brick” in a pair of houses in Krefeld, Germany constructed from 1929-31. Mies’s decision to use large repetitive picture windows in both houses forced the façade to be primarily made out of steel, therefore the brick façade is not acting as a structural solution, but merely a cladding. Here, I define “faux” not in the sense of fake-material, but as a fake structural strategy for the buildings envelope. Mies’s bricks are real, authentic physical materials, not the thin brick veneer used prolifically in the domestic and commercial buildings of suburban America, yet they are acting as a veneer to the structural integrity of the building. 
Lessons can be mined from Mies’s use of faux brick when imagining material thinness or fakeness in architecture today. &#38;nbsp;In the field, the research will begin by flying two drones in sychronization along the back elevation of both houses in a robotic fashion. The drone will begin its flight path at the top of the house and move downwards by 65mm (a coursing of a brick thickness) increments until it reaches the bottom of the house. &#38;nbsp;Once this photographic data is recorded onsite, the information will be brought back to the studio to produce a series of drawings and models with the aim of uncovering novel drawing techniques for designing faux-brick facades.

A precursor to the Office
Stack, MALL first studied the potentiality of sandwich stacks within the
discipline of architecture. (See Best Sandwiches.)&#38;nbsp;


Office
Stack is a midrise office tower that works through the architectural
stack by delaminating floorplates into a series of five individual buildings.
The tower, located in Huntsville, Alabama is reshuffled into a sandwich typology
where multiple co-tenants determine the image of the building based upon a
5-stack massing and facade materiality. This sandwiched architecture refuses to
conform to merely one identity allowing for each layer of the stack to project
a unique image of office culture while also making a larger statement back to a
city that demands individuality. By abstracting the image of a sandwich as a
series of interchangeable layers of “bacon, lettuce, and tomato,” Office Stack creates endless
possibilities for a new midrise typology.


A sandwich stacking logic allows us to break the
office tower into 5 separate parts, each with its own logic, internal
circulation system, and identity. The bottom layer becomes a parking garage,
while the four massings above function as autonomous office buildings with a
range of spatial flexibility built-in. Each office tenant is identifiable in
one of the five massings, no longer hidden inside a monolithic tower.
